Chichester City 0-2 Watford Ladies
Golden Girls continue fine form in pre-season...
WATFORD continued their pre-season winning streak after they sealed a comfortable 2-0 victory against newly promoted Premier Division side Chichester City on Sunday (6 July).
It should have been many more but two goals scored by Anneka Nuttall and Leah Cudone was enough to give the Hornets their third straight pre-season win.
Keith Boanas made four changes to the team that won against Leicester in their previous game with Fran Kitching, Adekite Fatuga-Dada, Cudone all in the starting line-up, while new signing Sarah Jones was handed her full first team debut in the back four.
The Hornets broke the deadlock in the 40th minute when skipper Nuttall brilliantly fired the ball from long range into the bottom corner to score her second goal in two pre-season games.
After the break, second half substitute Cherrelle Albert almost doubled the lead for Watford with an effort from six yards but the Chichester goalkeeper made an excellent save with her out-stretched leg to prevent a goal.
Chichester had two rare chances at the other end of the pitch, but thankfully Jo Fletcher was on hand in the Watford goal to make two superb stops.
Ten minutes later, Albert was involved again as she attempted to take advantage of the Chichester keeper who was positioned out of her goal, but her powerful strike from 18 yards rattled the top of the cross bar.
The Golden Girls deservedly increased their lead in the 68th minute when Cudone tapped the ball in the back of the net after a slick pass into the box from Albert.
Simona Petkova should have made it three in the final minutes, but her header went inches wide of the post following a corner from Charlotte Kerr.
Watford will travel to West Ham on Wednesday evening for their next pre-season fixture.
