Boanas reflects on Brighton defeat
After the disappointing 2-1 defeat to Brighton, we caught up with a rather frustrated Keith Boanas.
Watford Ladies fell to a dissapointing 2-1 defeat to Brighton on Sunday afternoon (16 April) in the WSL Spring Series.
The manager felt his side lacked urgency and failed to reach the high standards which have been set.
"It’s really frustrating from a coaching staffs point of view; we are struggling to come to terms as to why that is happening, we’ve asked the girls to think about it and let us know if there is anything we can do differently ourselves," he said, speaking to Watford Ladies Youtube after the game.
"In the second-half we camped in their half and had opportunities, it took an experienced goal keeper in Emma Byrne to keep them in the game.
‘But the first-half was probably the worst we have seen so far this season. It sounds disrespectful but Brighton are probably the weakest team that we have played."
When talking about the first goal the manager expressed: "I think the keeper has to take responsibility for that, and speaking to Tony the goalkeeping coach, she had every opportunity to come and deal with that with a good solid punch, and not let the player get to that."
"That’s when the other players need to take responsibility to get back into the game quicker and not to dwell on that.
‘That resulted in another sloppy goal, that was about reactions. It really looked like we hadn’t got out of bed. We weren’t doing what we did on Thursday in training, so its really frustrating for us.
"And then you are asking, are our players capable of understanding what we are teaching them and what we are saying, second half, yes all of a sudden, so why not the first half?"
Looking ahead to a busy week Boanas said: "We will need to get a 90-minute performance because I think potentially we are playing one of the strongest teams in the league in Donny Belles.
"For me, I prefer when the games are coming thick and fast as we can build on the defeat."
