Match Preview: Oxford United v Watford
Golden Girls face Oxford United Women this Sunday in final away game of the season...
The Hornets face Oxford United Women this Sunday (May 13) in what is their final away game of this WSL 2 campaign.
Oxford United were the Golden Girls' first opposition at home this campaign, way back in October. Only five players that featured in that match are still at the club, conveying how impressive the last match against Brighton was in terms of performance and result.
Armand Kavaja's side have impressed of late, despite being bottom of the table. Recent performances will give the young side confidence going into this match. The last time the Golden Girls won in the WSL 2 was also away against the same opposition, in what was also their final away game of the season. Can lighting strike twice? It better!
A look at the opposition
League position: 8th
SSE FA Women’s Cup: Fourth Round
Continental Tyres Cup: Fifth in Group Two North
Last Five: LDLLL
Oxford United started the season on fire, picking up seven points from their opening three games against Sheffield, Watford and Donny Belles. However, things took a turn when the club - similar to ourselves - announced that they would initially not be applying for a Tier 2 licence at the initial stage. Since then, the side have picked up only one win in 15 games in all competitions.
Andy Cook's side looked destined to record their highest league finish, as they collected points against Brighton, Doncaster and Sheffield in the opening couple of months of the season.
Kayleigh Hines is the player the Golden Girls will need to keep their eye on tomorrow. She is top scorer, returning six goals in 14 matches.
Last time we met
The Golden Girls faced Oxford United in their first home game of the season. It was a disappointing performance and result as the visitors secured a convincing 3-1 victory.
Fran Kitching, Charlotte Kerr and Anneka Nuttall all started, with Adekite Fatuga-Dada and Simona Petkova both introduced from the bench. Out of matchday squad of 17, the above five are the only players still involved with the Hornets.
Hannah Short gave the visitors the lead after only seven minutes and the advantage was doubled with a brilliant free-kick from Kayleigh Hines just after the half hour mark.
The deficit was reduced before the break as Sarah Jones’ first Watford goal put her side back in contention.
It was a second half of few opportunities but when one did present itself, Emily Allen made no mistake to give the U’s what proved to be a decisive two goal lead.
Watford: Kitching, Kerr, McKeag, Jones, Nuttall, Babajide, McCarthy, Bragg (Albert, 77), Sargent (Fatuga-Dada, 54), Will, Maple (Petkova, 80)
Subs not used: Fletcher, Puddefoot, Neal
